These are the most common questions our customers ask when choosing roll labels.
Printed labels are custom roll labels that arrive fully finished with your artwork applied.
They’re ideal when you need consistent branding, precise color, and professional quality across every piece. Unlike blank labels, printed labels are ready to apply straight out of the box.
We accept common professional print formats including PDF, AI, EPS, and high- resolution TIFF or PNG with CMYK color profiles. Files should be press-ready with fonts outlined or embedded. If you’re unsure, our team can review your file before printing to help ensure there are no issues.
Yes. Hickman can print multiple label designs within a single job, depending on the sizes and material constraints. This is common for multi-SKU packaging, seasonal variations, and product variations that share core materials.
Before printing, we provide a digital proof for your review. This shows your artwork positioned on the label and confirms layout, color, and orientation. You approve the proof before production starts, ensuring we match your expectations.
Note: If you’d prefer a physical proof, we’re happy to do that for a $75 charge that will then be applied back to your first order as a credit.
Printed labels can include a variety of finishes, such as:
Specialty finishes like foil stamping or embossing may also be available depending on material and press capabilities. Our specialists can walk you through options based on your product and environment.
With the right material and adhesive choice, printed labels can last for years even in demanding conditions like moisture, refrigeration, and handling. Factors such as surface type, environment, and product use should inform your material selection.
For small, variable runs, in-house printing might be more flexible. However, professionally printed labels often deliver lower cost per label, more consistent color, and premium finishes once quantities increase. When you factor in setup, quality, and speed, printed labels are often the most economical choice for medium to high volumes.
You can choose from a range of materials, including:
Material choice will depend on how the label will be used — e.g.moisture exposure, surface type, required durability, and desired visual effect.
Yes. Hickman offers sample packs so you can feel, test, and approve materials before committing to a full run. This is especially useful when evaluating adhesive performance or surface compatibility.
For a $75 fee, we’ll happily send you printed samples and credit that $75 towards your order.
Material and adhesive selection should be based on:
Our team will review your application and recommend the best combination to ensure performance.
Both options can be effective, depending on your needs. Printed labels are ideal when you want professional finishes, consistent color, and higher volumes without managing printing equipment. Printing in-house using blank roll labels offers flexibility for small runs, variable data, or frequently changing designs.
Many customers start with printed labels and transition to in-house printing as volumes grow or labeling needs become more dynamic. Each business is unique, so there isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ answer to when it’s the most efficient to transition to in-house printing. However, our team can help you determine which approach makes the most sense based on your workflow, budget, and production requirements.
